CREATING A CUSTOM REHAB PROGRAMME

How to create a custom rehabilitation programme on The Rehab Lab

Creating your own database of custom programmes on The Rehab Lab is easy. You can use The Rehab Lab's database of programmes as a starting point, or create new rehab programmes from scratch.

While every client has different needs, most health care professionals will prescribe a similar set of exercises for various conditions. Creating a custom programme for common conditions you see in your clinical setting is a useful way of speeding up the process of creating customised handouts for clients.

Once you have created a set of custom programmes, it is a simple matter of making small changes to the programme (be it to the content of the exercises, their number of repetitions etc or adding or removing exercises), saving you a great deal of time.

To create a custom programme, first log in to The Rehab Lab by clicking here and entering your username and password at the login screen. Once you have logged in, you will see The Rehab Lab 'exercise search screen' (the main screen). To create a new custom programme, follow these steps:

1. Search for exercises to add to your new programme

The Rehab Lab Exercise Search screen has helpful search options to enable you to find the exercises you require quickly and easily. These options can help refine your search results by body region (upper limb, lower limb, trunk, other), by joint and by exercise type (stretching & mobilising, strengthening & stabilising or neural and 'other').  You can also enter keywords to refine your search further.

Depending on the exercise you are searching for, from the drop-down menu, select the associated JOINT and EXERCISE TYPE, and click the SEARCH button (or simply press 'enter' on your keyboard).

Enter your search options

2. Select your exercise from the search results

All the exercises that match your search criteria will be displayed in the search results area. The number of exercises retrieved is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

To add your desired exercise to your new programme, click the Add Exercise To Programme button (the plus icon), or simply drag the exercise into the programme contents column on the right of the screen.

Add your exercise to your new programme

To preview an exercise, click the 'preview exercise' button (the magnifying glass icon), or simply double-click the exercise.

Click the magnifying glass icon to preview the exercise

Once your exercise has been added to the programme contents column on the right of the screen you can now edit the exercise to your liking.

3. Edit your exercise

You now have the option of editing the exercise to your preference. To edit your newly added exercise, click the Edit Exercise button on the blue exercise item that now appears in the programme contents column on the right of the screen (this is the pencil icon).

Click the pencil icon to open the 'EDIT EXERCISE' window

This will open the edit exercise window, where you can edit the exercise name, description, sets & repetitions and frequency. Once you have made your changes, click the Save Changes button.

Edit your exercise, then click the 'SAVE CHANGES' button

4. Add more exercises

Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 until you have added all the exercises you desire.

5. Add an information sheet to the programme (optional)

You also have the option of adding an information sheet to your programme. To read the how-to-guide explaining how to add an information sheet to your programme, click here.

6. OPEN THE 'CREATE PROGRAMME' WINDOW

Once you are happy with the content of your new programme, click the large CREATE PROGRAMME >> button at the top-right of the screen (above the programme contents column). This will open the CREATE YOUR PROGRAMME window.

Click the 'CREATE PROGRAMME >>' button to open the CREATE YOUR PROGRAMME window

7. ADD THE PROGRAMME TO YOUR CUSTOM DATABASE

From the CREATE YOUR PROGRAMME window, you have 3 sets of options (1. selecting a progamme layout, 2. entering programme headings, and 3. creating, saving or e-mailing your programme). Because you are not creating your programme as a PDF document, you can skip the first set of options.

The 'CREATE YOUR PROGRAMME' window

Under the second set of options (programme headings), enter a programme title and subtitle.
NB: this is important, as entering a title enables you to easily find your new custom programme when searching through your custom database in the future.

Once you have entered your titles, click the large ADD PROGRAMME TO CUSTOM DATABASE >> button located in the third set of options. This will open the ADD PROGRAMME TO YOUR CUSTOM DATABASE window.

Enter headings for your programme then click the 'ADD PROGRAMME TO CUSTOM DATABASE >>' button

8. REVIEW YOUR CUSTOM PROGRAMME

The ADD PROGRAMME TO YOUR CUSTOM DATABASE window allows you to review the headings and contents of your custom programme before adding it to your custom database. Double click an item to preview it.

To edit an item, return to the main screen (by closing the current window and then closing the CREATE YOUR PROGRAMME window).

If you are happy with the contents of your new programme, click the ADD TO CUSTOM PROGRAMME DATABASE button located at the bottom right of the window.

Review your programme headings, items and then click the 'ADD TO CUSTOM PROGRAMME DATABASE' button
